1990's

The 90's were marked by stability, growth and deepening purpose. As Slingsby welcomed the birth of his second child, he left behind suburban studio life to begin building a long-envisioned creative sanctuary on a densely forested acre of land and a space he would shape over the years into both home and studio. This period also saw a more focused commitment to fieldwork in the Richtersveld, where he regularly documented ancient petroglyphs. These journeys, begun in the late 80's, became central to the evolution of his glyph-based visual language.

The release

Oil on Arches cotton rag paper

"This is my tribute to celebrating the birth and life of Nelson Mandela on the 18th July. I painted 'The Release' an oil on Arches cotton rag paper, on the 11th February 1990 when Nelson Mandela was released from prison. I chose this Richtersveld petroglyph which reminded me of a face with (prison) bars across it."
